Our Pledge to Nature

At the heart of our little bookshop is a shared love of wildlife and the natural world. As a small, husband-and-wife business, we have the freedom to put our values first, and that means every decision we make comes from the heart. Supporting wildlife and conservation charities isn’t a side project for us, it’s part of who we are.

When you choose to shop with us, you’re not only supporting a small independent business, you’re also helping us give back to the wildlife and landscapes we all treasure.

We are donating 5% of our profits to some incredible nature charities, so every book you choose helps protect vulnerable species and the landscapes they call home. Find out more about the charities we are supporting this year and the essential work they are undertaking to help protect nature...

About The Mammal Society

The Mammal Society is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to the science-based conservation of mammals across Britain, the British Isles, and Ireland. Their work focuses on protecting native species, restoring habitats, and ensuring a more secure future for the wildlife we share these islands with.

What They Do

• Champion conservation projects
They support, strengthen, and promote conservation initiatives and policies that safeguard native mammal populations and the environments they rely on.

• Equip the next generation of nature protectors
Through training, resources, and hands-on survey programmes, they empower conservationists, students, volunteers, and wildlife enthusiasts to play an active role in mammal conservation, now and in the years ahead.

• Build awareness and public support
Education, outreach, and campaigning lie at the heart of their mission. They work to increase understanding of mammals and inspire more people to care about and advocate for their protection.

Their Guiding Values

Science-led
The Mammal Society bases all its decisions and recommendations on robust scientific evidence. Reliable data drives their conservation priorities and ensures their work creates meaningful impact.

Collaborative
They recognise that protecting wildlife is a shared responsibility. By working closely with partners, communities, and a wide range of organisations, they help create positive outcomes for both nature and people.

Agile and forward-thinking
Conservation challenges are constantly changing. The charity remains flexible, innovative, and committed to adapting their approach as new information, pressures, and opportunities arise.

About River Action

Rivers are the lifelines of our landscape, supporting communities, wildlife, and the health of the nation. But today, Britain’s rivers are in serious trouble, and River Action exists to help reverse this decline.

The Problem

Every river in Britain is polluted.
In England, only 14% meet a “good” ecological standard, and none achieve good chemical status. Pollution, over-extraction, and climate-driven floods and drought threaten both nature and public health. At the same time, government agencies responsible for protecting our rivers have been severely underfunded, allowing pollution to continue unchecked.

River Action was created to challenge this crisis directly and push for urgent, meaningful change.

What River Action Does

River Action focuses on three key areas:

1. Supporting Local Communities

They give volunteers, activists, and local groups the tools and training needed to monitor pollution, gather evidence, and protect their river catchments.

2. Raising National Awareness

By creating high-impact campaigns and media content, River Action amplifies the voices of river defenders and mobilises public support, putting pressure on the government and industry to act.

3. Driving Policy and Industry Reform

They fight for stronger enforcement of environmental laws, challenge failing regulation through legal action, and work with industries to adopt river-friendly practices backed by scientific evidence.

About Mountain Rescue

Mountain Rescue teams are much more than responders on rugged peaks. These dedicated volunteers provide emergency help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ensuring people in distress are brought to safety, wherever they may be.

What They Do

Rescuing Those in the Hills

Teams recover climbers from dangerous crags, guide lost walkers back to safety, and transport injured or ill casualties to essential medical care. Their expertise saves lives in some of the UK’s most challenging terrain.

Supporting Communities Beyond the Mountains

Mountain Rescue members also play a vital role off the hills. They help search for missing children and vulnerable adults, offering compassionate support to worried families throughout the process.

Responding to Floods and Water Emergencies

Teams operate along riverbanks, in fast-moving water, and through flooded streets, assisting swimmers, kayakers, and residents affected by severe weather.

Helping Animals in Need

From stranded dogs to trapped livestock, they rescue an impressive variety of animals from places that are often difficult or dangerous to reach.

The Commitment Behind the Work

All of this is achieved while members continually train in advanced first aid, technical ropework, water rescue, and search management. They also maintain their bases, equipment, vehicles, and their own fitness.

And remarkably, every single team member is a volunteer.

Thank you for choosing to shop small, and for caring about the natural world as much as we do.

Best wishes,
